Case Study - Risk Management Strategy for a Portfolio (MBA General Management )

Introduction

A portfolio is a collection of investments held by an institution or a private individual, such as corporate stock, fixed-income securities, or money-market instruments. A respectable investing portfolio is distinguished by its diversity. Diversification is done by distributing investments across assets to decrease risk based on the risk tolerance of the particular investor. Certain forms of risk (particularly specific risk) can be mitigated by owning many assets. Portfolios that are designed to take significant risks are known as concentrated portfolios. Portfolio management is the management of specific investment groups via the use of integrated strategic planning, integrated architectures, and performance metrics, risk management approaches, transition plans, and portfolio investment strategies.

Since Portfolio Management is a vast topic, it is not possible to get proper and detailed information from surveys and is difficult to arrive at a proper conclusion. As a result, we chose to use interviews as our technique. We interviewed top personnel from various companies and organization such as India Bulls, Met Life and Anand Rathi. The questions put forward to them were open ended questions because through open ended questions it is possible to get details about various asset classes and the investors risk appetite together with the possible rate of returns.

Objective of study

  1. Defining goals and objectives of the portfolio in terms of returns as well as the risk factor.
  2. Determine what to invest in and how much to invest.
  3. Identifying, eliminating, minimizing, and diversifying risk
  4. Monitoring portfolio performance: - Understanding the progress your portfolio is making
  5. Towards achieving of the goals and objectives of your organization.
  6. Achieving a desired objective will likely be achieved given the aggregate of investments that are made.
